With 5,300 Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies across the U.S., the company is on the front lines of the fight against opioid addiction. Taking its cue from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s safety guidelines, Walmart was the first national chain to put a seven-day limit on opioids prescribed for patients who are taking the drugs for a temporary condition, such as post-surgical pain or a sports injury.
Walmart has trained its pharmacists to counsel patients on why it’s important to take the medications as sparingly as possible to relieve severe pain. Their training also gives pharmacists a refresher course in pain management, including how to recommend over-the-counter remedies that can often be as effective as opioids but with fewer risks.
